On our recent Bali trip we were invited to visit Bali Zoo. The zoo is around an hour from most of the beach resort areas so we hired a driver to take us to the zoo and wait for us.
Bali Zoo has done away with cages for many of the animals; heading towards a more open feel of having water moats or ditches to keep animals in their enclosure similar to other great zoos like Singapore zoo. The zoo is also working towards upgrading enclosures. Bali Zoo is also involved in rehabilitation programs for a number of species including Elephants and Orangutan which is lovely to see.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the zoo. We started our day with Breakfast with the Orangutan before exploring the zoo.
There are so many additional options available at the zoo; you can choose to ride or feed an elephant, feed a lion, tiger, birds or deer. Most animal feeling sessions are very reasonably priced at 60,000 rupiah to purchase the feed. My son fed the huge tiger ‘King’ and held a small salt water Crocodile. The zoo is very interactive and you can choose to do as many or as few extra activities as you like.
Food at the zoo is surprisingly good! We had the buffet lunch at Elephant View restaurant and were really pleasantly surprise at the quality. Much of the food on offer is prepared fresh for you and the desserts are rather delish. During the lunch hour there is a brief drumming performance in the restaurant.
